Early History

The first jail in Schoolcraft County was built in 1883. It was a small, wooden structure located behind the courthouse in Manistique. The jail was used to house both male and female inmates. In 1924, a new jail was built on the same site. This jail was a larger, brick structure with two stories. It had separate cells for male and female inmates.

Modern History

In 1987, the Schoolcraft County Jail was expanded to include a third story. This expansion added 32 new cells to the jail. In 2002, the jail was renovated to improve security and safety. The renovations included the installation of new security cameras, intercom systems, and lighting.
